Getting Married at Your University Pub: A McMaster Wedding
When we ask couples where they want to take portraits, we’re really asking: what is a place that means something to your relationship?
Most people think of a beautiful park or a scenic backdrop, maybe even somewhere convenient to your wedding ceremony or reception, but Talia & Stan went a different direction entirely: they got married at the pub where they went to university. And honestly? It was exactly them.
The Phoenix Crafthouse & Grill at McMaster University in Hamilton is their place. It's where their story lives, and choosing it as their wedding venue brought a warmth and personality to the day that no rented hall could replicate. Walking in to find the space decorated with string lights, long family style tables, board games, and— our absolute favourite that we still talk about— a life-size cutout of George Clooney, you could immediately feel what kind of celebration this was going to be.
If you've ever wondered whether a non-traditional venue can work for a wedding, take this wedding as your answer. The most meaningful spaces make for the most meaningful photos, and there's something really special about getting married somewhere that already holds so much of your story.
The morning did start with some rain, but Talia and Stan were completely unfazed. They'd done an engagement session with us earlier in the year, and that comfort showed; they moved through portraits easily and naturally, relaxed and laughing right from the get go. The ceremony space was set up beautifully, and the overall atmosphere was exactly what you'd want: joyful, light-hearted, and completely celebratory. The kind of day where the room feels full in every sense of the word.
Thinking about doing something a little outside the traditional mould for your own wedding? We'd love to hear about it!
