Delrene & Jose’s City Chic Engagement Session
As we continue to shoot over the years, our style continues to evolve, and these days I would consider this engagement our ideal session and here’s why…
We have really come to love shooting in an editorial style while still sticking to our documentary roots, and this engagement session is full of both of those moments. Some are definitely more obvious than others, but I think you’d be surprised to find out just exactly which moments were ‘posed’ and which were not. Our approach to editorial engagement photography is more about prompting over posing; saying ‘cross the street hand in hand while swinging your arms, and look back at me as you do’ instead of saying ‘stand in the middle of the cross walk holding hands, turn your head 45 degrees over your shoulder, tilt your chin up a little, and smile but not too hard of a smile’. The latter is a less enjoyable experience, wouldn’t you agree? We want you to still feel like you’re having fun and you are not being too stiff, while looking glamorous, chic, and like the most fabulous version of yourself— and if you need any inspiration for that, look no further than Delrene & Jose’s chic city engagement session!
Toronto engagement photography in spring and summer can be tricky, because it is also construction season (booo!) and there was no shortage of bright orange pylons, blocked roads, piles of debris, and equipment sitting around our shoot areas. When Delrene was putting together a moodboard for what they were envisioning for their session— something we always encourage— she pulled a few photos that looked just like the Esplanade area of the city. We love shooting downtown, but being downtown at sunset is not always the most ideal; being surrounded by 50+ storey buildings on all sides make it difficult to actually have a clear line of site to a sunset, so I’m so glad we were able to agree on being around the St. Lawrence Market area instead where you still get the feeling of being in the city without being blocked by banking towers. I’m always so excited when we get to go to multiple locations so after our city vibe we headed to the Polson Pier and Cherry Beach for some waterfront photos with champagne. The perfect end to a perfect evening, wouldn’t you agree?
