Why You Should Book An Engagement Session Before Your Wedding

If you’re wondering if you should book the engagement session here’s what we say to almost every couple we meet: think of it as a practice run, not an aesthetic or trendy shoot you ‘should’ do

The most common thing we hear from couples before their wedding is some version of "I'm not great in front of a camera" or “I feel so awkward in photos.” And the most common thing we hear after their wedding is "that was so much easier than I expected." The difference, more often than not, is the engagement session!

Your wedding day moves fast; there's a lot happening, a lot of people watching, and suddenly you're expected to stand in front of a camera and look natural?! For someone who (most likely) has never really been formally photographed before, or who has and found it uncomfortable (we’re right there with you!) that can feel like a lot. An engagement session takes that pressure off the table. It's low stakes, it's just the two of you, and it's a chance to figure out what it actually feels like to be in front of the camera together, before one of the biggest days of your lives.

By the time your wedding day rolls around, you've already done it once. You know what to expect from us, you know how we direct, and you've had a chance to move through any awkwardness in a more casual setting. That comfort shows up in your wedding photos in a really noticeable way.

And guess what, it helps us, too!

An engagement session isn't just valuable for you, it's valuable for us. Every couple is different. Some people loosen up immediately, some need a few minutes to find their footing, some are naturally expressive, and some are more reserved. Getting to spend time with you before your wedding means we have a better idea of how you move, how you interact, what makes you laugh, and how to get the best out of you when it counts. We show up to your wedding day with a better understanding of you, and that makes a real difference in our overall chemistry together.

And hey, at the end of the day you get great photos out of it!

Beyond all the practical benefits, an engagement session gives you a gallery from one of the most exciting times in your relationship. You're engaged and that's worth documenting! Whether you use them for save the dates, a wedding website, or just to have them all to yourselves, they're always worth making time for.
