All About Ethan

It’s that time of year again, your birthday is coming up (March 29)! What are you wishing for this year?

It’s been a tough month and long story short I need a new car haha, so that’s definitely at the top of my list. Specifically a 1985 Mercedes 300TDT in Navy or Blood Red… you know, if anyone wants to get me just a casual birthday gift ;)

Tell us about your day to day at Rosewood!

I’ll be honest, I’m not one for the admin and blogging side of what we have to do (which is actually quite a large portion of our job) so I let Stef & Hannah take lead on that- they prefer it that way too so it works out for all of us haha. I do a lot of our in person work with our couples (introductory meetings to run through who we are, our process, and what you can expect from us, as well as more specific meetings about our contract, specifically shooting this or that, etc.) and I also edit quite a bit of our weddings! When Stef & Hannah have an idea about something I’m usually the one who plays devils advocate or works out the logistics of things. I’m also 6’1 so I’m usually the one who shoots larger group photos (for a taller perspective) and in general gets things off of the top shelves lol

What are you most looking forward to this wedding season?

Tbh, I’m not sure yet. I’m excited to shoot and I genuinely am looking forward to all of the amazing couples and families that we get to work with this year but we also are still a long ways out and I know that we’re still going to be booking a lot more so I’m trying not to get too excited too early on you know? What I am really antsy for is Hannah’s wedding though! But (wedding aside) that’s just because we get to take little mid-season vacation and how could anyone not be excited for that?!

Your dream wedding (to shoot): Who, What, Where?

Somewhere tropical with a like-minded couple (an adventurous and outdoorsy type, who love and appreciate our work)

What's your favourite part of a wedding day?

The ceremony! So we always shoot weddings with 2 people and during the ceremony— I think— is when we shoot the most different from each other (angles, style, lighting sometimes) and I always really enjoy the work we produce then. It’s also the most intimate and emotional part of the day, and really what everyone is looking forward to!

Tell us about what you do to prepare before a wedding day!

Having a big breakfast is important because there are usually delays throughout the day, which means delays in when we get to eat next. Food = fuel so even though it might sound silly it’s always important for us to have a full stomach and be hydrated (especially for all of those outdoor, midday, weddings in the summer)

Who are some of your biggest photography influences?

I don’t think I’m influenced by a lot of people, necessarily, but I do really enjoy the work of Robert Mapplethorpe, Chris Wahl, and Brendan George Ko

So you're into bike riding- tell us more!

It might comes as a surprise to some but even after breaking both of my wrists, my femur, and kneecap biking (wrists happened on separate occasions, femur and knee were at the same time) I still love it. I have been mountain biking since I was 12 or 13, it’s what I would do with all of my time if I had the option haha (and if my girlfriend let me………….) I’ve definitely had my ups and downs throughout the years but I wouldn’t change that for any other sport!

What are your career goals?

PDN’s Top 30 would be a definite career goal for Stef + I. Otherwise my goals are pretty simple: to be happy and successful!

What Are Your Faves…

Favourite movie:

Point Break (the Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze one, obviously), Face/Off and Interstellar are all tied for my favourite movies

Favourite food:

Grilled octopus and- separately- pizza (with sausage, roasted red peppers, sun dried tomatoes)

Favourite lens:

24-70mm f/2.8

Favourite local getaway:

Tommy Thompson Park (the Spit) or somewhere around Georgian Bay.

Favourite beer:

Peroni (for on the dock) or Muskoka Detour (for in the lodge)

If there's anywhere in the world that you could be right now, where would it be?

Andorra, New Zealand, or Hawaii. Somewhere warm.

What are your favourite trails to ride?

I mostly ride the Don Valley because it's so close. But Jefferson Forest (in Stouffville and also where I broke my leg/knee), 3 Stage (in Collingwood), and Blue Mountain are really fun.

Okay, last question- what's your favourite aspect of being apart of the Rosewood team?

Being able to shoot in so many different areas of Ontario that I normally wouldn't travel to and connecting with a ton of different and interesting people!
